Steely Dan, I.G.Y. and Kweisi Mfume
Posted: Monday, December 13, 2004 1 Hour 40 Minutes 23 Seconds Post Meridian

Steeley Dan and Donald Fagan came to mind the other day. One of my favorite songs by Steeley Dan was "I.G.Y.". Its thirty years old but, its still a great song full of optimisim and hope for the future. The chorus goes:

"What a beautiful world this would be"
"What a glorious time to be free"

I look at the world today and, it seems that things are different now.

Dick Gephardt: Gone.
Tom Daschle: Gone.
George W. Bush: Re-Elected
Terry McAuliffe: Gone

To add icing on the cake I learned that Kweisi Mfume is leaving the NAACP. To his credit, he rescued the organization and got it out of debt using corporate style tactics and management skills to make it solvent. However, it would seem that the NAACP these days is nothing more than part of the Democratic coalition. Instead of fighting for things that a majority of blacks want like school vouchers and faith based programs, they instead oppose anything the GOP proposes even if it benefits the very people they say they are fighting for.

Now if Julian Bond would leave and fade into the sunset or, into the sun that would be even better.

Anyway for now, I"ll take what I can get. Sing with me!

"What a beautiful world this would be"
"What a glorious time to be free"

The song had nothing to do Kweisi's departure. Im just happy he is gone.

There's really no good reason to attack a brother. Music, especially Fagan/Dan's is ideologically open-source in nature. The song expresses both hope and caution to be sure, but each person will move through a song in a psychological process related to their own consciousness. Good music like this helps to guide us rather than just hammer on us. It doesn't force it's revelations on anyone. So if you're one step ahead don't banally berate the other guy. After all, the song you like so well didn't.

As you are so misguided, I will help you. I.G.Y. was not a song by Steeley Dan, (though you did get it right that it was an awsum song.) It was by Donald Fagan, (one member of Steeley Dan.) In addition; (like his and their songs usually are), it was full of irony and if you listen closely to the lyrics..."A just machine to make big decisions, programmed by fellas with compassion and vision, we'll be CLEAN when their work is done, we'll be eternally free and eternally young, Ooohhh"...you'll see that he was not singing of a very optimistic, self determined, conservative utopian future. He was saying that this future is something to be careful about. That's ok, your chickens will be coming home to roost soon!!!

A very awesome song indeed. Also a perfect theme song for coming times. The current generation of complaining blacks will diminish in the increasing number of us that open our eyes to the benefits of conservativism.

Even with Emfume gone the naacp is still continuing to be less and less relevant as well as effective and will be as long as they are a wing of the democratic party. I doubt seriously that this is the naacp that Dr King had envisioned
