Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger from Germany is now
Pope Benedict XVI. Pope Benedict XVI, 78 served as the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith for Pope Jean Paul II. Basically he defended
church policy against less conservative elements.
Going into the conclave Ratzinger seemed to be the favorite.
