This is getting stupid.
Don Imus and Bernard McGuirk are facing a lawsuit filed by Kia Vaughn the center for the Rutgers women's basketball team.
In addition to Don Imus, and Bernard McGuirk the rest of the western world is also named in the suit: In this case MSNBC, NBC Universal, CBS Radio, CBS Corp., Viacom Inc., and Westwood One Radio.
According to the Associated Press, Kia's attorney Richard Ancowitz said: "This is a lawsuit in order to restore the good name and reputation of my client, Kia Vaughn," said her attorney, Richard Ancowitz.
This is preposterous at best. Let me fire some bullets at this.
- Don Imus has already publicly and privately apologized to the team and publicly and privately expressed regret in having made his remarks, "nappy headed hoe" among them.
- Nobody cares about women's sports. The fact that Kia Vaughn played on the Rutgers team will not register with any male employer. Nobody would care, she would be amongst the billions of graduates from the school looking for a job.
- People will however care about someone who files frivolous lawsuits. I would not hire her now for fear of litigation and bad publicity for my business by her presence.
- I predict she was approached by people that persuaded her consent to sue.
Now how about all the black men who have called her far worse publicly and privately during her life and times, how come those people have not been sued? Many rap artists refer to all women as bitches and hoes but none have precipitated anything other than a slap on the wrist from Al Sharpton.
This lawsuit may put some money in Kia Vaughn's pocket and subsequently the pockets of everyone else who will step up to get paid off as soon as her case is settled. Kia Vaughn and anyone else who decides to try to get rich quick should be wary. The effect of being called a money grubbing hoe and proving it with this lawsuit will be far worse than being called a nappy headed hoe ever will be.
I hope its worth it monetarily. There is nothing else to gain. If you want to stop people like Don Imus and the legion of rappers from calling black women names, then start by persuading them from engaging in the abhorrent behavior that earned them that reputation in the first place.
